Emissions Crushed By Customers - Keeping NI On The Path To A Low Carbon Economy

10th October 2006

Experts at Phoenix Natural Gas have revealed that in the 10 years since the industry established itself here, local natural gas customers have helped prevent over 1.6 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

Chantal Hemphill, Phoenix's Health, Safety and Environmental Manager reflected:

“Natural gas produces 25% less carbon dioxide than oil and virtually no sulphur dioxide. This has not only improved the local air quality, as reported by local councils, but has also helped the Government to meet its climate change targets”.

Geoff Smyth, NI Manager of the Carbon Trust, commented:

“There is no doubt that the introduction of natural gas has helped with the substantial reduction of carbon emissions that is leading Northern Ireland onto the pathway towards a low carbon economy”.
