Charity Award For North Down Special Olympic Club

24th April 2006

The Special Olympic section of North Down Athletic Club has received a vital boost with the news that it has been awarded funding from the Phoenix Energy for Children Charity.

The assistance is great news for the club’s proposed summer coaching scheme for children of all abilities under the age of 11.

North Down Athletic Club has been very active in providing both children with disabilities and disadvantaged children the opportunity to participate in and enjoy sport. The award will now enable the club to purchase all the necessary athletic clothing and footwear that the disadvantaged children need. This will provide them with the opportunity to participate together with primary school children of all abilities in the sport of athletics during the coming summer months.

The Energy for Children Charity set up by the natural gas industry aims to raise £100,000 towards the needs of disadvantaged children and to really make a difference to their lives.

Gillian Weir, Senior Coach with North Down Special Olympic Club, said:

“I am absolutely delighted that our Special Olympic section has been given this charity award as it will make the world of difference to so many kids. The funding for our Summer scheme will ensure the provision of track and field coaching for primary school children of all ages, including those who may be disadvantaged through no fault of their own ”.
